The Lamb and the Shepherd
“Behold! The Lamb of God”
(John 1: 29 - NKJV)
“I am the good shepherd”
(John 10: 11 - NLT)
The mystery of what has become known as the “trinity” is something, which is, at least in part, beyond the scope of human comprehension. In trying to formulise God, to distil and reduce him to the level of human understanding many have made shipwreck of their faith. In addition and as a result of this mystery different groups and cults have sprung up denying even the possibility of a three-fold expression of the one true God. Yet such multifaceted expressions of God are found throughout the Bible.
John saw in Jesus God’s Lamb – while at the same time having the revelation from the lips of Jesus himself that he is The Shepherd. How can one be both the Lamb and the Shepherd at he same time? We can only answer that both are an expression of His nature. Yet the concept is one we struggle to accept – simply because we cannot fully grasp it.
In the final analysis we do not worship a God who we can fully understand, for as he reminds us Himself – “My thought are completely different from yours” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” (Isaiah 55: 8 – NLT) Yet there is no doubt - he is at one and the same time my Shepherd and my Lamb. Only a divine love could conceive this.
