The Pearl
“When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it”
(Matthew 13: 46 - NLT)
The parable of Jesus often referred to as “the pearl of great price” has many and had various interpretations. However, I suspect that the majority miss the simple point Jesus was attempting to drive home to those who surrounded him on this occasion. Some of them may have have connected the words of Jesus with a well-known passage in their religious literature where the writer stated - “He (God) found them in a desert land, in an empty, howling wasteland. He surrounded them and watched over them; he guarded them as his most precious possession”. (Deuteronomy 32:10 - NLT)
Although addressed to the people of Israel almost 1500 years before Jesus spoke these words, this passage reveals the passion of the heart of God towards his children.
The simple truth is – we are the pearl of great price – we are of incalculable value,we are the reason the eternal God became as a merchant selling all he had to purchase the pearl and make it his very own. We are the reason Jesus left the majesty of heaven. We are the reason he suffered and died. He watches over you and guards you. He comes in to the desert and empty places of our lives – seeking us out as his treasured possession!
