The Fountain
“With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation!”
(Isaiah 12: 3 - NLT)
“For you are the fountain of life … “
(Psalm 36: 9- NLT)
A fountain speaks of cleansing (Zechariah 13: 1) vitality (Genesis 49: 22) wisdom (Proverbs 13:14) reverence (Proverbs 14: 27) discretion (Proverbs 16: 22) and refreshing (Song of Solomon 5: 15). However, the fountain speaks most clearly about our relationship with the Father, for he is - “The Lord, the fountain of living water.” (Jeremiah 17:13). To forsake this Fountain will lead to dryness and death (see- Jeremiah 17: 13).
During an ancient Jewish celebration (Sukkoth) there was, at one point, the “Rejoicing of the house of drawing water” (Simcha Bet-Ha-sho-evah) during which the priest took water from a pool (Siloam) to the temple where he poured it over the alter. During the journey from the pool to the temple he was followed by the people amidst much dancing and singing. It was on the last day of this celebration that John records – “Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, If you are thirsty, come to me! If you believe in me come and drink…” (John 7 37&38 – NLT)
In Hebrew the word Yeshus (Jesus) means salvation! Jesus is the fountain of Salvation spoken of by Isaiah and the fountain of life spoken of by David. He is also our daily cleansing, vitality, wisdom, and refreshing.
